Mosappu saaru with kalu or Mixed Greens Curry or how prepare mosoppu saaru

Mosoppu means mashed greens. Mosoppu is a South Karnataka specialty dish. It is prepared using many different leafy vegetables/herbs which is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, very healthy and energetic traditional South Indian curry . It is a mixture of many herbs, dal, onion, garlic, tomato, which makes a tasty and nutritious curry. In winter season(December) tender pulses like Togarikalu(pigeon pea), Avarekalu(field beans), Kadale kai beeja (pea nuts) are available, adding kalu/pulses to the curry makes more healthy and flavorful, a seasonal curry passed from generations. Just try and enjoy with rice or ragi mudde.
Ingredients:
Spinach – 1 bunch
Dantina soppu (Amarnath leaves) -1 bunch
Spinach – 1 bunch
Fennugreek leaves – 1 bunch
Sabsige soppu/dill leaves – 1 bunch
Coriander leaves – 1 bunch
Togarikalu/pigeon peas – 1 cup
Avarekalu/field beans – 1 cup
Peanut – 1 cup
Tur dal – 1 cup
Onion – 1 no,chopped
Garlic 1 whole[splitted into cloves]
Green chilli – 4 to 5 no’s
Tomato – 2 no’s
Grated coconut – 1 cup
Salt to taste
For seasoning:-
Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
Curry leaves – 1 or 2 springs
Oil – 2 tbs
Procedure:
Pressure cook avarekalu(field beans), togarikalu (pigeon peas) and raw peanuts, together add 1 cup of water ans salt to taste, cook it for 3 whistles until done and keep aside.
In a pressure cooker add tur dal, onion, garlic, tomatoes, green chilies and herbs altogether add one glass of water to cook, pressure cook for one or two whistle,
drain the water with a colander and collect the water in a container (do not waste this water as it is added to the curry) and allow the mixture to cool for 10 to 15 min.
Once the mixture is cooled, add the mixture in to jar and grind it to a coarse paste .
Add the grounded paste to the same container.
Grind grated coconut into a fine paste add this to the same container of grounded mixtures.
Add cooked pulses, add salt to taste mix altogether keep the mixture to boil bring it to boil to 8 minutes in a medium flame and turn off the flame after 8 min.
Take a tadka pan add 2 tsp of oil in it when oil becomes hot add mustard seeds, when it begins to crackle, add curry leaves. Add this tadka to the curry and transfer to a serving dish.
Enjoy nutritious Mossappu saaru with rice or raggi mudde.
