Tomato rasam recipe

Tomato rasam is a quick easy, aromatic rasam, usually known as tomato “Thili saaru” in Kannada. There are many recipes for making tomato rasam. This is the easiest and simple recipe to make tomato rasam plus a delicious one. It is a traditional rasam which I learned from my granny and it is loved by all even today. Do try and enjoy this traditional tomato rasam and enjoy it with rice.
Ingredients:
To cook –
Tomato – 2 or 3 medium size
To dry roast –
Pepper – 1 tsp
Cumin – 1 1/2 tsp
Other ingredients –
Mustard seeds – 3/4 tsp
Garlic – 6 to 7 cloves
Curry leaves – 3 springs
dry red chilly – 2 no’s broken into small pieces
Onion – 1 small chopped finely
Sambar powder – 1 tbs
Jaggery – 1 1/2 tbs grated (adjust to your taste)
Tamarind – small marble size ball
Fresh Coriander – 3 to 4 tbs chopped
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil for seasoning
Method:
To make or to prepare Tomato Rasam –
Add tomatoes in a vessel, cook until it becomes soft/pressure cook it for one whistle, once it is ready, remove it from the water, put it on a plate and allow it to cool.
Soak tamarind in hot water and set aside.
Heat a pan and dry fry pepper until it splutters, fry it in a medium flame and set aside.
In the same pan add cumin, dry fry until it turns light brown and set aside.
Crush roasted ingredients to a coarse powder and keep ready.
Squeeze boiled tomatoes
Add sambar powder, crushed powder, jaggery, turmeric powder, chopped coriander, into it
Squeeze tamarind and remove the waste from it, add the juice of it.
Add tomato boiled water and add water to your consistency and keep ready.
Crush garlic for tempering
Heat oil for tempering in a vessel, when it is hot add mustard seeds allow it to sizzle, then add crushed garlic, dry red chilies, and curry leaves, saute until you get a nice aroma
Add chopped onion and fry until onions turn to translucent.
Add prepared mixture into it, add salt to taste and
Bring it to boil for 6 to 8 min. Switch off the flame, add chopped coriander.
Aromatic Tomato rasam/Tomato thili saaru is ready to serve.
Enjoy Tomato rasam with rice and accompany it with papad and curries.

Notes –
You can add the number of tomatoes to your choice, and also other ingredients to adjust to your taste.
You can add any sambar powder to prepare this recipe or you can avoid/ skip it and add just roasted and crushed pepper and cumin powder, which also gives a good taste.
