Tomato onion chutney recipe

Tomato onion chutney is an easy and tasty chutney to accompany it with idli or dosa’s. It is prepared with ripe tomatoes, onion, chana dal, red chilies with grated coconut. It is simple and easy to prepare recipe, a tangy and tasty south Indian chutney. Do try and enjoy with any south Indian breakfast.

Serves – 4
Ingredients –
Coconut – 1/2 small part of a coconut (1/2 cup)
Chana dal – 2 tbs
Dry red chilies – 4-5 no’s (adjust to your taste)
Onion – 1 medium chopped roughly
Ripe tomato – 2 – 3 no’s chopped
Garlic – 1 or 2 cloves
Curry leaves – 5- 6 leaves
Salt to taste
Oil – 1-2 tbs
For tempering –
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Asofoetida – 1 pinch (powdered)
Curry leaves – 1 spring
Oil – 1/2 tsp
Method –
To make or to prepare tomato onion chutney –
Keep all the ingredients ready to start as shown in the above image.
Heat a pan by adding oil in it, when it is hot add chana dal and chilies, fry until chana dal turns to light brown. (in a medium flame) When it is done remove and set aside.
In the same pan (in the same oil) add chopped onion, curry leaves fry until it turns to translucent
Add chopped tomatoes and fry until it becomes soft, remove it from the flame allow it to cool.
Add coconut, roasted channa dal, chilies, garlic and salt in a mixer jar and make a dry powder without adding water to it.
Add fried tomato and onion mixture
Grind it to make a chutney, add little water.
Transfer the prepared chutney to a serving dish.
Heat oil in a tadka pan, when it is hot add mustard seeds in it, allow it to sizzle add curry leaves and a pinch of hing (asofoetida) remove from the flame, add prepared tempering to chutney
Combine it with chutney properly.
Enjoy delicious Tomato onion chutney with any south Indian breakfast dishes like Idli, dosa, neer dosa, Rava dosa.
Notes –
Take care while frying the ingredients, not to burn or under cook any ingredients as it spoils the taste of chutney.
For flavor you can add ginger other than garlic .
If you wish sweet in taste, you can add a marble size of jaggery along with salt.
