Steamed dal vada I Habe vade recipe

Steamed vada is a low cal and healthy vada recipe which is able to incorporate the benefits of chana dal or Bengal gram. It is a healthier version of a deep fried masala vada/ fritter. A traditional Karnataka dish popularly known as Havi vade/habe vade. An easy to make recipe with simple ingredients.
Ingredients:
Chana Dal (split chickpeas) – 1 1/2 cup
Ginger – 1 inch roughly chopped
Green chilies – 2 no’s
Coconut chopped – 2 tbs
Coriander – 1 bunch chopped
Dill leaves – 1 bunch chopped finely (optional)
Curry leaves – 2 spring finely chopped
Onion – 2 medium finely chopped (optional)
Mustard – 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp powdered
Salt to taste
Oil for seasoning – 1 or 2 tsp
Method:
Rinse and Soak chana dal for 2 hrs, when it is done drain the water and grind it (without adding water )by adding green chilies, ginger and salt to taste, in a mixer jar to a coarse mixture and keep ready.
Keep all the ingredients handy to start.
Heat little oil in a pan, when it is hot sizzle mustard, add curry leaves, asafoetida
Add grounded mixture, chopped coriander, dill leaves, saute for a while in a medium flame. Remove from the flame, allow it to cool at room temperature.
Divide the lentil mixture into 12 -14 portions and shape them into oval shaped dumplings. add water in a steamer to steam, (Grease a pan or steaming plate with oil or ghee (optional))and place the dumplings in it. Steam the dumplings in a pressure cooker or steamer for 10-12 mins.
Serve hot with coconut chutney.
