Traditional South Indian chicken curry

In South India coconut and curry leaves are popular ingredients in curry. This is a basic chicken curry, easily prepared with simple ingredients which is rich in taste and it can be served as a side dish with biryani, roti’s, poori’s and akki roti’s. 

 Preparation time – 15 to 20 min

Cooking time – 20 to 25 min

Serves – 4 to 5

Ingredients  :

Chicken – 1 kg

Onion – 2 medium size ( cut 1 onion into medium pieces and another chopped for seasoning)

Ginger – 1/2 inch chopped roughly

Garlic – 1o  cloves

Cloves – 3 to 4 nos

Cinnamon – 2 small pieces

Coconut – 1 cup (grated)

Coriander powder – 3 tsp

Red chili powder – 1 to 2 tsp

Turmeric powder – 1 tsp

Curry leaves – 8 to 10 leaves

Coriander leaves – 2 tsp (chopped)

Salt to taste

Oil to fry – 3 to 4 tsp

Procedure :

Clean and wash the chicken pieces drain and keep aside. Make a paste of all the above ingredients by adding little water.

Take a kadai add curry leaves, chopped coriander leaves and 1 chopped onion into it, sauté till it turns to golden brown in colour.

Add cleaned and dressed chicken pieces mix well cook till water evaporates from it add salt to taste. Add grounded masala paste and mix properly till raw smell disappears.

Add a cup of water and mix the masala together, cover the lid of the kadai.

Cook in a medium flame for 20 to 25 min. When chicken cooked, see the consistency and bring it to a thick curry.

Enjoy with Biryani as a side dish.
