Pineapple rasam recipe

Pineapple rasam is a spicy tangy and slightly sweet rasam definitely it is very unique by its taste and flavour. It is healthy and easy to make recipe prepared with moong dal, pineapple, tomato, onion with spices which gives a special taste and flavour to the dish, just try and enjoy as a soup or with steamed rice. Rasam is one of the most comforting food apart from dal.

Ingredients –
To pressure cook –
Moong dal – 1/2 cup
Tomato – 2 small or 1 big
Pineapple – 1 ring (about 1 inch thick) chopped roughly
Method –
To pressure cook dal –
Wash and drain 1/2 cup of moong dal in water, add whole tomatoes and water to cook, take roughly chopped pineapple in a bowl add 1/4 cup of water to it, place the bowl on the dal and pressure cook for 3 or 4 whistles. When it is done remove the cooked pineapple and set aside (to grind).
Ingredients to grind –
Cumin – 1 tbs
Pepper – 1/2 tbs ( adjust to your taste)
Garlic – 10 cloves peeled
Add cumin and peeper in a mixer jar and run the mixer to make a coarse powder out of it, then add garlic cloves and make a coarse mixture and set aside.
Add cooked pineapple into the same jar and make a paste of it.
Ingredients to mix with dal
Onion – 1 small chopped (optional)
Coriander – 1 bunch chopped
Curry leaves – 2 springs chopped
Turmeric – 1/2 tsp
Crushed pepper, cumin and garlic mixture and prepared pineapple paste
Method –
Mash cooked dal and tomato properly, add all the above ingredients and mix together/squeeze together, add enough water (adjust to your taste of consistency) and keep ready.
For Tempering –
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Asofietida/hing – 1 pinch (powdered)
Red chilly – 2 no’s broken into two pieces
Curry leaves – 2 springs
Pineapple – 1/2 cup chopped
Oil / ghee – 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Heat oil/ghee in a pan, when it is hot add mustard seeds allow it to splutter, add curry leaves, red chilies, asofietida/hing saute for a while and add chopped pineapple saute until it become soft and translucent.
Cook in a medium flame.
Add dal mixture into it and bring to boil, add salt to taste.
Boil it for 5 to 6 min in a medium flame and remove from the flame.
Aromatic sweet flavored pineapple rasam is ready to enjoy with rice or serve as a delicious soup.
Notes –
you can soak dal for 15 minutes in hot water, so that it will get cook well, moreover it saves a lot of time and fuel.
If you like more spicy you can add rasam powder or a tsp of sambar powder in preparation.
Serve the flavorful rasam hot, with rice and appalam, along with the other curries.
You can add jaggery(grated) to adjust your taste which is optional.
