Kara kadubu I spicy steamed dumplings recipe

Khara kadubu is a spicy and healthy, protein rich snack usually prepared on Ganesha chathurthi. Spicy lentil mixture filled in rice dumplings and steamed, which is very popular dish in Karnataka.We can have it as snacks or as a breakfast dish. It is prepared with healthy ingredients like soaked chana dal, mixed herbs like dill, coriander, mint, green chilies, ginger which makes a yummy healthy snack.Just try and enjoy 🙂
Preparation time – 15 min
Soaking time – 1 hr
Cooking time – 10 min
Serves – 4
Ingredients –
Chana dal – 2 cup (soaked for 1 hr)
Dill leaves – 1 bunch chopped
coriander – 1 bunch chopped
Mint leaves – 1/2 bunch (optional)chopped
coconut – 1/2 cup grated
Salt to taste
To grind –
Green chilies – 3 medium
Ginger – 1 inch cut into small pieces
For tempering –
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – 1 spring chopped
Asafoetida – 1 pinch
Oil or ghee – 2 tsp
Procedure to make or to prepare kara kadubu/spicy dumplings –
Soak chana dal for 1 hr , drain out the water in it and set aside.
Grind green chilies and ginger without adding water to a coarse paste. Add soaked and drained chana dal into it and make a coarse paste.
Collect grounded mixture in a bowl. Add grated coconut, chopped herbs and salt to taste combine altogether and set aside.
Heat a tadka pan by adding oil in it , when it is hot add mustard seeds allow it to sizzle then add curry leaves and asafoetida turn off the flame add prepared seasoning to the mixture and mix properly .
Take a small portion of mixture and make a oval shaped balls and set aside.
Ingredients to prepare kadubu –
Rice flour – 5oo gm
Salt – 1 pinch
Oil – 2 tsp
water – 1 liter
Procedure to make or to prepare Kara kadubu –
1. Boil 1 liter of water in a vessel. Add a pinch of salt and ghee,when it begins to boil, add rice flour and maida when water is boiling.
2. Allow the flour to boil with water for next 5 min in a low flame. Mix the flour with water using a wooden spatula. Cover the vessel and let it stand for few mins/or till it is manageable to knead so that no lumps should be seen. Divide the dough into equal portions. Each portion should be of medium sized lemon
3. Place it on left palm make a hole in a center and go on pressing gently to a cup shape. So that stuffing can be filled, Take a spoon full of prepared oval shaped mixture in the center of the prepared cup and Seal the edges.
Arrange prepared kadubu so that it doesn’t touch /stick each other. Steam them in a steamer for 10 min.
After steaming them for 10 min remove gently with a spoon and set aside.
Kara Kadubu/Steamed Dumplings make a very healthy snack with with cup of coffee/tea. They are made on festive occasions to be precise on Ganesh Chaturthi in my house.
