Fish masala fry I Koddai fish masala fry

Fish masala fry is a tasty side dish and an easy to make recipe with simple ingredients, Fish is marinated with spices, then shallow fried, then cooked with aromatic masala which makes a tasty side dish to enjoy with sambar rice or roti’s. A typical coastal Karnataka recipe.
Ingredients:
For marination –
Koddai Fish or any variety of fish – 750 gm
Chilly powder – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
Lemon juice or vinegar – 1 1/2 tsp
Salt
To grind –
Onion – 1 small roughly chopped
Dry Kashmir chilies – 5 to 6 no’s
Coriander – 1 tsp
Garlic – 4 or 5 pods
Tamarind – small piece
Other ingredients –
Curry leaves for seasoning
Oil to fry (preferably coconut oil)

Method:
Clean the fish, rinse, drain the water in it, add spice powder in a bowl, add salt lemon juice make a thick paste add cleaned fish apply or coat the prepared paste on each fish and set aside for 3 hr in refrigerator.
After marination, shallow fry by adding little oil, in a medium flame, until 3/4 done, cook it for both sides,
Fry it in 2 or 3 batches and place it on a kitchen tissue
Add all the ingredients to blend, grind it to a smooth paste by adding enough water to blend and keep ready.
Add oil in a shallow pan, when it is hot add curry leaves fry until it splutters, add grounded masala paste, salt to taste, fry until it thickens and oil starts to separate from the edges.
Now arrange the shallow fried fish on it, make a low flame, apply/coat the gravy on each fish. cook covered for 2 min, switch off the flame.
Serve hot with lemon wedges
Garnish with chopped coriander.
