Breadfruit shallow fried fritters I ಜಿಗುಜ್ಜೆ ಪೋಡಿ

Breadfruit fry is a tasty shallow fried fritters to serve as a side dish for Dal rice/sambar rice. Jeegujje in local language – Bread fruit is widely cultivated and consumed in Karnataka coastal regions. It belongs to same family as jack fruit. This is soft, buttery vegetable, suits with any dishes to prepare like fritters, curry or sambar.

Ingredients:

Breadfruit – 250 gms

Salt to taste

Oil to shallow fry

Semolina/Rawa to coat – 1/4 cup

To grind –

Rice – 1/4 cup soaked for 30 mins

Byadgi chilies – 5 no’s

Chilly powder – 1 tsp

Turmeric – 1/4 tsp

Tamarind – a small marble sized ball

Asafetida – 1/4 tsp powdered

Method:

Wash & cut the breadfruit into half (vertically) and remove the skin gently. Grease your palms with a little oil. Cut into quarters, and immerse in water.

Add all the ingredients to a blender, make a paste by adding little water to a fine paste, to dosa batter consistency.

Apply it to the breadfruit pieces evenly.

Dip the masala coated slices into semolina for both sides. Heat oil in a shallow pan, when it is hot

Arrange them so that it don’t touch each other. Shallow fry on a medium flame until golden brown and crisp.

Continue the same for the rest.

It tastes yummy without semolina also.
