Breadfruit curry recipe – Jeegujje curry

Jeegujje is known as Bread fruit and is widely cultivated and consumed in Karnataka coastal regions. It belongs to same family as jack fruit. This is soft, buttery vegetable, suits with any dishes to prepare like pakoda, curry or sambar.

Serves – 4
Ingredients –
Breadfruit – 1/2 of a big breadfruit chopped into medium pieces
Kabul chana – 1 cup
To grind –
Coconut – 1/2 cup
Onion – 1/2 of a medium onion
Garlic – 6 cloves
Tamarind juice – 1/2 tsp
To fry –
Coriander – 1 tsp
Cumin – 1/4 tsp
Fenugreek seeds – 1 pinch
Red chilies – 5 no’s
For Tempering –
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves – 2 springs
Onion – 1 medium chopped
Oil to fry
How to prepare or to make Bread fruit curry –
Soak kabul chana for 5 to 6 hrs or soak it for over night .
Wash & cut the breadfruit into half (vertically) and remove the skin gently. Grease your palms with a little oil. Cut into quarters, remove the pith and cut into small chunks and immerse in water.
Heat a pan by adding 1 tsp of oil in it, when it is hot fry the ingredients to golden in colour and set aside.
Pressure cook soaked kabul chana for 4 whistle by adding water and salt to taste, cook breadfruit chunks in a separate pan
No need to pressure cook bread fruit as it takes very less time to cook (similar to raw banana) so cook bread fruit in a pan by adding little water untill it is done.
Combine both when it is done.
Add all the ingredients to grind and make a fine paste by adding water.
Add grounded paste and mix properly.
Bring the curry to boil for 5 min in a medium flame to a thick grayish consistency.
Heat a pan by adding oil in it, when oil is hot add mustard seeds, allow it to sizzle, add curry leaves fry for a while.
Add chopped onion and fry till it turns to translucent.
Add prepared tempering to the curry and mix altogether and switch off the flame.
Enjoy jeegujje curry /Breadfruit curry as a side dish for rice or roti’s.
Tips – This curry taste rich when it is prepared with coconut oil.
If you wish sweet in taste add 2 tsp of grated jaggery which is optional.
