Brahmi Sambar

Brahmi sambar is a nutritious and delicious South Indian curry, It is a quick and easy to make sambar prepared with Brahmi leaves which is ideal to serve with hot steamed rice. Brahmi is a medicinal herb that grows in the fields which is a powerhouse of nutrients.
Ingredients:
Brahmi – 2 bunches
Coconut – 1/2 cup
Cumin – 1/4 tsp
Peppercorns – 6 to 8
Chana dal – 1 tsp
Urad dal – 3/4 Tsp
Dry chilies – 5 or 6 no’s
Tamarind – a small piece
Salt to taste
Jaggery (optional)
For Tempering –
Mustard – 1/4 Tsp
Curry leaves – 1 spring
Asafoetida – 2 pinches

Method:
Clean and rinse Brahmi leaves, cook it with a cup of water (covered). It takes about 5 mins to be done.
Once cooked switch off the flame. remove the cooked leaves to a plate with a spatula spread it on a plate to cool. Meanwhile fry chana dal, urad dal, dry chilies, cumin, peppercorns and tamarind with little oil until light brown.
Blend coconut and roasted ingredients with 1/4 tsp of turmeric to a fine paste, add water as needed.
Finally, add cooked Brahmi leaves, blend it for few mins.
Mix blended masala paste to the stock, add water to adjust the consistency. Add salt and jaggery (optional) to taste, stir. Bring it to boil for few mins.
For tempering heat 1 tsp of ghee/oil, when it is hot sizzle mustard seeds, switch off the flame add curry leaves and asafoetida. Add prepared seasoning to sambar. Stir
