Besi Bele Bhath recipe

Besi bele bhath is a very popular dish in Karnataka, prepared with dal, mixed vegetables, rice and many spices which are not just healthy it is irresistible, nowadays there are many ready made powder for Bisi bele bath is available in the market,however nothing can beat the taste of aromatic homemade Besi bele bhath. many think that is a very elaborate process but actually, it is very simple to make. South Indian cuisine is known for its healthy recipes and Besi bele bhath is also one in that category. It tastes great when it is served hot hence the name Bisi bele bhath.
Rice -1 cup
Tur dal – 1/2 cup
Mixed vegetables – 1/2 cup each chopped like carrot, beans, turnip,
green peas, cabbage, potato
(you can add your choice of vegetables)
To fry/to grind –
Chana dal – 2 tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Coriander seeds – 2 tbsp
Poppy seeds – 1 tsp
Red chilly – 6 to 8 nos
Pepper corns – 5 to 6 nos
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Fenugreek – 1/2 tsp
Cloves – 4 nos
Cinnamon – 3 nos
Nutmeg – small piece
Mace – 2 small flakes
Tamarind – 1 marble sized ball
Grated coconut – 1 cup
Oil to fry
For seasoning –
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Onion – 1 no (chopped)
Tomato – 1 no (chopped)
Curry leaves – 10 to 15 leaves
Red whole chilly – 4 nos
Cashew nuts – 10 to 15 nos
Coriander leaves – 1 bunch (chopped)
Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Jaggery – 1 or 2 tbs grated (adjust to your taste)
Grated dry copra – 1/4 cup
Salt to taste
Oil – 2 tbs
Ghee – 1 tbs
Ingredients:
How to prepare Besi bele bhath
Rinse rice, pressure cook it for 3 whistles by adding 2 1/2 cup of water to cook 1 cup of rice.
Pressure cook Dal and vegetables together by adding 1 1/2 cup of water and keep aside.
Keep all the ingredients handy to fry,
Take a frying pan add 1 tsp of oil and fry all the above ingredients one by one by adding oil, fry it to light brown, except grated coconut and tamarind.
Take a mixer jar add all the fried ingredients, grated coconut, tamarind and grind into a paste and set aside.
Keep all the Ingredients for seasoning:
Take a Casserole or a large container heat oil in it, when oil becomes hot add mustard seeds when it begins to sparkle, add cashew nuts, saute till light brown in color. Add, asafoetida, curry leaves, red hole chilies, chopped coriander, saute
Add onion fry till it becomes translucent, add chopped tomatoes, fry until soft, once done add grounded masala paste, saute
Add cooked dal, vegetables, rice mix properly, add water to adjust medium in consistency, add salt, jaggery
Bring to boil for 5 min, close the lid of the casserole cook in low flame for 5 to 6min.
Add grated dry copra and mix once again. Switch off the flame.
Traditional Bisi Bele Bhat is ready to serve,
Serve hot with Khara Bundi and Ghee.
