Kerala banana chips is the most popular snack for all occasion which can be prepared in a short time. Commonly banana chips or banana wafers made from raw unripe bananas, which is easy and simple homemade banana chips recipe, do try and enjoy as a tea time snack in a short time.

Preparation time – 15 min  

Cooking time – 15 min

Serves – 6

Ingredients –

Raw banana (Nendran banana) – 4 no’s

Turmeric – 1 tsp

Salt to taste

Coconut oil to deep frying

Method –

To make or to prepare Banana chips – 

Take a fresh raw nendran banana. Cut/chop both the edges of the raw banana.

Make a straight cut to the skin with the help of a knife, which helps to remove the skin. Once the skin is slit, peel it with your thumb.

Take a bowl of water and add turmeric powder and 1 tsp of salt to it. Immerse the peeled raw banana in it till submerged for 10-15 minutes.

After 10-15 minutes, take the raw banana out of the turmeric water and pat them dry.

Heat coconut oil on a medium flame in a pan. When the oil becomes hot, drop one slice and test the oil if it is hot enough.  If the slice comes to the top immediately, it means the oil is now ready.

Slice it into round slices with the help of a slicer directly into hot oil, take care do not overcrowd the oil with too many slices, Slice slowly, take care while you slice into hot oil. Slice 1/2 part of each banana at each batch, so that the slice should fall all around the pan. Deep fry it in a medium flame,add a spoonful of salt water over the chips being fried.  The oil may splatter a bit, but not much. The chips will absorb the salt. Fry it till the bubbles settle down, now when you start moving these with a strainer you should hear nice crackling sound. That is when they are ready.

Take it from the oil  and strain them to remove excess oil.

Crispy  Banana (nendran) chips are now ready to enjoy as a tea time snack or as an accompaniment for any breakfast or rice dishes.

Note –

While deep frying do not overcrowd the oil with too many slices, otherwise they won’t get cooked properly.

You can also add pepper powder for different taste and flavor.

Banana chips prepared with nendran banana is always prepared with coconut oil to get perfect taste and flavor.

If you are trying for first time you can add/ sprinkle salt finally after deep frying

As we have already added salt for soaking, add/ sprinkle salt to taste when it is hot.
