Avarekalu Akki tari uppittu I Hyacinth beans Broken rice upma

Akki tari uppittu is a traditional breakfast dish of Karnataka, made with broken raw rice/coarsely powdered rice, Avarekalu or Field Beans is quite common during winter season in south India, adding these flat beans add a unique earthy flavour to the dish. An easy to make recipe with simple ingredients, do try and enjoy as a breakfast dish or as an evening snack.
Ingredients:
Broken raw rice/coarsely powdered raw rice – 1 cup
Avare kalu/field beans – 3/4 cup
Mustard – 1/4 tsp
Cumin – 1/4 tsp
Chana dal – 1 tsp
Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
Cashew nut – 1 tbs
Curry leaves – 2 springs
Green chilies – 3 no’s chopped
Ginger – 1 tsp grated
Asafoetida – 2 pinch powdered
Onion – 2 no’s chopped
Coriander – 1 small bunch chopped
Coconut – 3/4 cup shredded
Salt to taste
Oil to fry

Method:
Rinse Avarekalu/flat beans and drain the water in it, heat a pressure cooker pan, add 1 tsp of oil in it, when it is hot add avarekalu in it, saute for 2 min add 2 cup of water and salt, cook it for 3 whistles and keep ready.
Heat a pan add broken rice in it, dry fry it for 3 minutes in a medium flame, remove it from the flame and set aside,
In the same pan add oil, when it is hot add mustard seeds, allow it to splutter in oil, add cumin, cashew nut, chana dal, urad dal fry until it turns to light brown in color, once done add chopped chilies, grated ginger, asafoetida, curry leaves, chopped coriander, saute in oil, add chopped onion, fry it turns to translucent
Add cooked flat beans along the water in it, add another 1 cup of water (totally 3 cup of water to cook 1 cup of broken rice) bring the mixture to boil, check the salt add if necessary.
once the mixture begins to boil, add broken rice, by stirring as there is no lumps in it, make a low flame and cook covered for 6 to 7 min, fluff it once before done, cook for few more min, remove from the flame.
Once done add freshly shredded coconut, chopped coriander toss it well, squeeze fresh lemon juice, mix well
Serve hot and Enjoy Traditional Avare kalu akki tari uppittu witha dollop of ghee over it.
Note –
You can add mixed veggies of your taste along with flat beans, which makes more healthy and delicious.
Freshly shredded coconut is the key ingredient for this recipe, you can add chopped tomatoes after frying onion, skip adding lemon juice if you add tomato.
Adding onion is optional, you can just temper and add cooked flat beans. which is also a traditional preparation.
