Avarekalu Akki rotti

AKKI ROTTI is a rice based breakfast item unique to the state of Karnataka, especially in Bangalore and Mysore region it is most common breakfast which is delicious and filled with healthy ingredients. Avarekalu akki rotti delicacy during December-avarekalu season.It is one of the tasty breakfast which is loved by all ages.Ayurveda an ancient science of healthy living has emphasized on using fresh herbs everyday.Knowingly or unknowingly,we have been following this ancient wisdom day to day basis.Any Indian kitchen is incomplete without herbs.Dill leaves is most commonly used in preparation of akki roti which has high iron content,this akki roti is made from dill leaves, avarekalu ,onion,jeera and other spices mixed with rice flour.
Preparation time – 10 min
Cooking time – 20 – 30 min
Serves – 4-5
Ingredients –
Rice flour – 5oo gm
Chiroti rawa – 3 tbs
Onion – 3 medium chopped
Coconut – 2 tbs chopped
Sabbakki soppu/Dill leaves – 1 bunch finely chopped
Avarekalu/Indian field beans – 1 cup
Coriander leaves – 1 cup chopped
Curry leaves – 1 spring chopped
Red chilies/green chilies – 3 no’s chopped
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Channa dal – 2 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil to fry.
Procedure –
Take a pressure cooker pan cook avare kalu for 2-3 whistles and keep aside.
Take a kadai heat it add oil in it when it is hot add mustard seeds when it starts to crackle add cumin,curry leaves coriander leaves,stir fry add chopped onions and chopped dill leaves fry till you get a nice aroma.
Mix altogether,add cooked avrekalu/field beans and fry for a while,add chopped coconut pieces and fry altogether.
Add water [cooked avarekalu water should be strained and use the same do not waste it] 1:2 proportion,bring it to boil add salt to taste.
Add rice flour and mix altogether .
Add 3 tbs of chiroti rava [ to get crispy akki rotti ] mixed with 6 tbs of water mix altogether and make a soft dough.
Take a medium sized ball place it on a plastic or butter paper grease with oil
Pat them with fingers to a circle.
Place it on the tawa on flame,add oil to the edges,cover and cook the rotties for 3 to 4 min on medium heat till brown spots appear on its surface,flip it around and cook for another minute/2 min.
Avarekalu akki rotti is ready to be served,serve hot with coconut chutney and ghee.
