Avalakki uppittu recipe I Poha upma

Avalakki uppittu (poha upma) is a simplest and quickest breakfast dish. It is a healthy and a filling breakfast dish, It is a popular and common snack. Avallakki uppittu is prepared with a thick variety of flattened rice, by soaking it for 10 min, then seasoned similarly to upma,  a delicious dish to enjoy as a breakfast or as an evening snack.  

Ingredients:

Thick flattened rice (poha/ gatti avalakki) – 2 cup

Onion – 2 or 3 chopped

Tomato – 1 medium chopped

Curry leaves – 3 springs

Green chilies – 3 – 4 no’s chopped

Coriander – 1 small bunch chopped

Mustard – 1/2 tsp

Peanut – 3 – 4 tbs

Chana dal – 1 1/2 tsp

Urad dal – 1 tsp

Grated coconut – 1/4 cup (optional)

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Salt to taste

Oil to fry

Method:

Rinse poha for 2 to 3 times in water, drain the water in it, then add water and soak it for 5 to 7 min, drain the water by transferring soaked poha to a colander, drain the water in it and set aside.

Keep all the ingredients ready as shown in the above image to start.

Heat a pan by adding oil in it, when it is hot add peanuts and fry in a medium flame until it turns to golden brown and crisp,  remove it and set aside separately.

In the same oil add mustard, allow it sizzle in oil, then add chana dal and urad dal fry until it turns to light brown, add chopped chilies, coriander and curry leaves together and fry for a while

Add chopped onion fry until it turns to translucent

Add chopped tomato and fry until tomato becomes soft, add turmeric powder, saute

Add soaked and drained poha into it, toss it well add salt to taste.

Combine properly, close the lid and cook for 5 min in a low flame.

Switch off the flame, add roasted/fried peanuts,

Add chopped coriander, grated coconut, toss it once again together. Rest it for 5 min before you serve.

Delicious Avalakki uppittu is ready to serve, Serve hot and enjoy with yogurt.

Note –

When you soak poha for 5 to 7 min, check it is soft to prepare, if not soak it for some more time and also take care that the poha must not become mushy, don’t soak it for a long time, the soaked poha must be soft and grainy to make avalakki uppittu.
