Raw Mango Dal I Mavinakayi Pappu I Mavinakayi Tovve

Raw Mango Dal is a delicious and easy to make South Indian Dal made with Toor dal and raw mango. This dal has a very typical flavor because of the natural sourness of raw mango, tastes heavenly when served with hot Rice. Mavinakayi Tovve is a family favorite recipe prepared quite often throughout the Mango season. Dal and rice is a simple comfort food which can be relished with any spicy vegetable curry.
Ingredients:
To cook –
Toor Dal – 3/4 cup
Raw mango – 1 medium chopped/grated
Green chilies – 4 no’s slit lengthy
Other ingredients –
Chilly powder – 1 Tsp
Turmeric – 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
For tempering –
Oil/ ghee – 2 Tsp
Mustard – 1/2 Tsp
Dry chilies – 2 no’s
Asafoetida – 1/4 Tsp powdered
Curry leaves – 2 springs

Method:
Cook Toor dal for 2 whistles by adding 2 cups of water.
Once the pressure releases completely, open the lid, mash the cooked dal with a spatula,
Now add raw mango cubes and green chilies, again pressure cook it for further 2 whistles and set aside.
open the lid, bring the dal mixture to boil, stir, add chilly powder, turmeric and salt to taste. Boil it for 5 mins on a medium flame. The consistency of the dal must be semi thick not watery. So add water if needed to adjust the consistency.
After a good boil, heat oil/ghee in a tempering pan, when it is hot add mustard, allow it to splutter, then add asafoetida (powdered), broken dry chilies and curry leaves, allow it to splutter, take care not to over roast or burn any ingredients which will spoil the taste of the curry. Add the prepared tempering to dal mixture, stir.
Serve hot with Steamed rice.
